Boyden CEO Addresses AMCHAM on Myth of Leadership Shortage

"The logic that global leadership shortages exist is beguiling," said Mr. Clarke. "The demand for leaders is indeed rapidly increasing, though the idea that there is a declining supply of suitable leaders is misleading. Too often the usual suspects and celebrity CEOs are trotted out for leadership jobs at the world's top organizations."

Highlights of Mr. Clarke's address to executives at the AMCHAM event include:

The Demand for Leaders is Increasing: "There are a number of arguments as to why the demand for leaders is increasing. The world economy has undergone an unprecedented era of growth. New businesses are spawning and old ones getting bigger and more complex. CEO and executive tenure is falling and this leads to more frequent vacancies."

Economics 101: "As compensation for leaders rises, the supply of leaders rises until the point where supply and demand matches. Executives may work longer hours; retirement can be delayed; leaders are more willing to move to tough spots or assignments; and parents return to the workforce. Smart organizations are experts at developing a cadre of leadership candidates to keep pace with demand."

The Arrival of Leaders: "The arrival of eager leaders to reap the higher pay levels drives down the pay levels. At a granular level, the pay decision is made for each individual; though the compensation can be affected by executive's market, country, type of expertise and many other categories. Higher compensation for one mini market for leadership will attract others to retread and move across over time."

Real World Recruitment: To support the rising demand, the leadership solutions according to Mr. Clarke, include:

-- Develop a tested cadre of successors

-- Search more internationally when there is a vacancy

-- Consider even greater diversity

-- Consider leaders who are outside the usual age ranges

-- Recognize that existing senior team members might have an ability to grow and step up

-- Only pay the market price for each executive that's needed

"For a wider global group of executives, there are exciting, interesting and important management positions and board seats," added Mr. Clarke. "Companies and recruiters are endlessly seeking better leaders, but there is not a dearth of talent. Rather decision makers need to be more open to developing, seeking and finding leadership candidates."
