Govt concern at growth in timber plantations
Saturday May 10, 2008, 10:28 am
Tasmania's Primary Industries Minister says he is concerned about the impact of timber plantations on regional communities. David Llewellyn has attended a public meeting at Levendale in the Southern Midlands which is suffering from an exodus of young people. Some locals believe the drain is partly because of rising numbers of tree plantations. Mr Llewellyn says the government is looking into whether plantations should be allowed on prime agricultural land. "It does have an effect on local communities," Mr Llewellyn said. "Obviously the right of a farmer to sell their property, you know for their superannuation or whatever, you know. I don't think anyone would want to deny anyone the right to re-adjust their lives in that respect," he said.
