Beechwood faces liquidation by end of day
Monday July 21, 2008, 7:47 am

Collapsed New South Wales building company Beechwood Homes is set to be liquidated if it is not sold by the end of business today.

Around 300 people building homes and another 500 people with home plans have been affected by the company's collapse.

Beechwood's receiver, Deloitte, last week said there were two strong bidders for the company and it was hopeful of reaching a deal to sell the company by today.

State Opposition fair trading spokeswoman Catherine Cusack says the NSW Government must protect stakeholders if Beechwood is liquidated.

"There's been a lot of buck-passing going on and I think that's been a major source of frustration for all the victims," she said.

"There's a lot of people with a lot of money at stake and basically, we want to make sure someone's in there fighting for the consumers and the tradies and the building companies."

Ms Cusack says the Government should do more to help the victims of the collapse.

"We believe that because there are so many consumers involved, the Minister should organise legal advice and intervene to make sure that their rights are protected," she said.

"If she does that, that will protect the rights of all of the other creditors as well."
