Tasmania has recorded a tourism milestone with more than 1,000,000 people visiting the state in one year. Tourism Tasmania's annual report reveals visitor numbers were nine per cent higher than the previous period. They injected a total of $2.2 billion into the local economy. The number of international visitors fell by 4 per cent to 149,500 people. But the state's share of the cruise ship market soared, with more than 105,000 passengers visiting, a 27 per cent increase on the previous year. The figure equates to 11 per cent of all visitors to Tasmania in the year to July. The report also says the Government's sponsorship of the Hawthorn Football Club brought 24,000 visitors to the games at York Park. The economic benefit is estimated at $8 million.
