Ministers mull national e-waste recycling plan
Thursday November 5, 2009, 9:48 am

Environment Ministers are meeting to decide whether to introduce a national recycling scheme for old televisions and computers.

A proposed scheme would make the electrical and electronics industry responsible for collecting and recycling e-waste.

South Australia's Environment Minister Jay Weatherill says a small charge would be added to the price of TVs and computers to pay for future recycling.

He says the idea has some industry support.

"We've just got tonnes and tonnes of computers and televisions going to landfill with a lot of toxic substances that could easily be recycled so there's very strong support for a national e-waste recycling scheme," he said.

Mr Weatherill says SA already has the infrastructure in place to recycle computers and televisions.

"Of the 115 depots that are already around the state for recycling of our bottles and cans, 80 per cent of them have said that they're prepared to participate in an e-waste recycling scheme," he said.
