Oil and gas company Woodside says it is working to improve its Indigenous employment record in Western Australia.

Woodside employs about 30 full-time Aboriginal staff and 250 contractors.

Chief executive Don Voelte conceded his company does not have a good record with Indigenous employment.

But he says Woodside is aiming to triple its Indigenous workforce by 2012.

On top of that, all contracting companies hired by Woodside must have some Indigenous employees, he said.

"Woodside cannot be successful inside the fence of our operation if the people outside the fence aren't as successful from that operation," he said.

"In other words, the community has to participate in the success for Woodside to be successful."
