Is artwork a good investment for my super fund?
I have a self-managed super fund and I was wondering about putting artwork into my portfolio of assets. I am told it is doable but what do you think about it for a super fund? Sarah, Willoughby, NSW

Are we in for a market crash?
For the life of me I cannot understand how market experts can be positive about the stock market this year when it rose so strongly last year. Surely, we are in for another crash and this has been a sucker's rally? Jack, Byron Bay, NSW

Should we borrow money for renovations?
My accountant has suggested we think about buying the building we work out of inside our self-managed super fund. We have a bit of money in our super fund but we would have to borrow to make it happen. Now I know we can borrow to complete the deal but the building needs lots of repairs - that's why the owner is selling but it explains why it's a good buy. Can we borrow for the renovations? Larry, St Ives, NSW

Do I need an expert's opinion to buy shares?
One of the weekend newspapers gave a list of 20 shares that five different experts recommended. So I was thinking about using these as the basis of putting together my first portfolio of shares. I have $40,000 saved up and I want to buy $2000 of each share. What do you think about my strategy? Donna, Port Macquarie, NSW

Is it time for Australia to disassociate it self from the US?
Without doubt there is a necessity to increase interest rates to recoup the money spent in financial bailouts and we have seen one in the last 12 months of an unprecedented nature.
In the last significant recession, the extra cash injected in the US economy was approximately 13% of GDP. This caused the interest rates to increase generally to the high teens or close to 20% approximately 2 years later. I have heard figures that they have injected up to 120% in this recession. As we have already had 15 months or so of this issue it seems to me that interest rates must increase dramatically over the next 6 to 9 months to begin the process of rebuilding.
What concerns me is that not that they will have to have increased interest rates but that Australia seems to be closely linked to the US banking structure and I wonder if our local interest rates will be forced to follow the US to a much higher level than we need to. Is it time for Australia to disassociate it self from the US system so that we aren't unnecessarily penalised as our economy is in basically good shape? It seems to me that the US economy is in far worse shape than they care to admit and will try to do whatever they can to reduce the impact on the own economy by clawing back cash from the rest of the world.

How long should I lock my money up for?
I don't want to be too heavily exposed to the stock market, like I was when the last crash happened, so I want to be in fixed deposits to be diversified, however I have a problem. You see, I don't know how long I should lock my money up for? What would you advise? Sarah, Mount Gambier, SA.

Is it safe to invest in the stock market now?
I lost a fair bit of money in 2008 when the stock market tanked by going to cash after the market fell 35% and I was too scared to go back in last year as I kept reading about another correction. Do you think it is safe to go back in now? Jack, Tugan, QLD.

A budget is boring!
Last week you told someone who asked you a question about getting on top of their finances to do a budget. It seems so boring and it makes you feel negative about your position so it actually turns me off having a go at improving my position. What advice do you have for me. Jill, Rockhampton, QLD.

I've been left $200,000 by a relative in a will and don't know how to invest it. I'm 35 with a good job and currently I'm paying off a $450,000 home loan. Should I pay off the home loan or invest it in shares, property or super? Should I go to an adviser? Irene, Armadale, Vic.

When does a market enter a rally?
I keep hearing commentators on business shows like yours on Sky Business talk about short-covering rallies. I thought shorting should take a market down not up into a rally. Please explain.

How do I get the best variable rate?
I am looking for the best interest rate I can get as I plan to start looking for my first house over the holiday period, though I am getting a bit scared about interest rate rises. I don't like fixed rates because of the cost of breaking the loan if you want to say sell your house before the loan expires. What should I do to get the best variable home loan rate of interest? Julia, Richmond, VIC.
